Make that two steps...

The step up at this morning's relationship declaration program was an elegantly simple affair. We arrived at the majestic 127 year old Glebe Town Hall 10 minutes early, and were greeted by the registering officer, Nick Hespe, whom we first met at the City of Sydney office. He was accompanied by two other officers who worked at the Glebe Town Hall, and informed us that it was their first relationship declaration ceremony at their council office. So they were just as excited.

We were ushered upstairs, where we got a glimpse of the gorgeous interior with stained glass windows and classic high plaster ceilings. As if to accentuate the mood of the morning, incidentally there was a pianist in the main hall next to our room who was playing something.

In the small hall where the ceremony was held, one of the officers had made an effort to dress up a little table with a vase of fresh flowers. I was pleasantly surprised at the gesture.

The ring that ties the knot

Nothing says I'm "tying the knot" better than the ring Lee chose.

While there are so many meanings to "tie the knot" which I've found, my favourite is this -

A Swedish exchange student told me that illiterate sailors and soldiers of yesteryear would send a piece of rope to their sweethearts when they wanted to get married. If the rope came back with a knot in it, that meant she said "yes" to the marriage proposal. He demonstrated this by tying two ornate knots in a length of rope. When the ends were pulled, the knots came together in the middle. Even if this isn't the origin of the expression, it was a charming demonstration.

To come, an account of us

My "bratty little brother's" entry at his blog reminded me that I don't have an account of how Lee and I met and come this far. I just assumed that everyone coming here are via my main blog and know about our story.

So while our story can be traced back from my online relationship archive, I will write a more complete one especially for this blog a little later.

Engagement blessing

Since Lee will be in KL for about two weeks late August, we're planning a small private engagement party cum blessing ceremony at home. Dates unconfirmed until we get a priest. This is to officiate our engagement, and to introduce Lee to family and friends who haven't met him, yet.
