Couple Assessment

We completed Centacare's Marriage Preparation course at the end of last month after three one half hour "one-on-one" weekly sessions with our counsellor. How the sessions were conducted was circled around the results from the preliminary questionnaire Lee and I completed separately before the new year. There weren't any right or wrong answers, but we were measured up against each other's answers to see if we had any differing opinions about statements which may be cause for conflict in the relationship.

Interestingly, we were explained to that there are four levels of a couple's state based on the results. By order of ideals, there was the Vitalized Couple, Harmonious Couple, Traditional Couple and Conflicting Couple.

And guess which were we? The Conflicting Couple. It came to as almost "alarming" as how the word "conflicting" could come across as negative. But as we went along with looking at our answers paired up, it became evident that the only reason we have such "low" scores was because some answers were left undecided.

Our counsellor was quite a character himself, who made the sessions quite enjoyable and we came out from it being affirmed of the things Lee and I had previously shared, as well as understanding the expectations of a married relationship.

Although I felt affirmed by the discussions we had, I felt like the three sessions were too short and too structured around the questionnaire results. We were given an activity booklet, to which we only did two out of the numerous ones in it. But besides that, it didn't feel very dynamic.

I guess the only reason why I say this is because I'm comparing the sessions to the Evenings for the Engaged course in Malaysia, where I've heard from friends that they are taught things like Natural Family Planning, are given weekly homework, and that it also runs for once a week sessions for six weeks! Which are conducted by married couples.

It is probably a matter of cultural differences in which they're trying to cater to here in Australia, where cohabitation and individualism are more prevalent, hence a very focused relationship enrichment programme. Centacare does have a separate Natural Family Planning programme, but you will need to pay another fee for attending it.

I'm just curious now what kind of personal involvement does a couple get from attending the group programme since they're also three one half hour sessions.

well, not all the courses ran for 6 weeks. ted n i attended the one which lasted over the weekend called evening for the engaged which was most suitable for us for obvious reasons. although it was short i think they covered a lot la. sadly, the doc who was suppose to give us a session on billings method came late hence all we got was 1/hr talk n lots of googe-ing up on my end! lol =P and we still ended up with an early 'package'
