Joining the circus
It's been a circus of a week for me. Trying to answer and reply all the email responses from my "Friends ad", arranging meet-ups from those responses, dealing with a blow out with the "friend", volunteering at the neighbourhood centre and caring for a neighbour's 4-year old. I guess I can't complain of boredom now that I've a bit more control of what I'm doing.
Ironically, the ad has turned out to be quite a breath of fresh air and relief escapism for me. It's unbelievable how many other girls there are new to Sydney and sort of struggling to make new friends. What's more interesting and affirming to know, is how they relate to my situation no matter their backgrounds. There's been a variation of periods that they've been in Sydney, from two months to seven years. And, to reiterate my fascination for Sydney's multicultural population, I've had responses of people from all over the world who've moved to Sydney - from the UK, Ireland, America, Canada, Germany, South America, Bangladesh, India, South Africa, Filipina bred in NZ, then of course Aussie... I swear if all of them came together in one meet-up, it would feel like a UN gathering! Hehe...
I mentioned the girls mostly because I felt more confident and comfortable meeting up with them rather than the guys. The girls sounded rather genuine in their emails, unless English wasn't their first language then their emails tend to be shorter and harder to get a vibe from. However, all the exchanges so far have been amazing and I've already a total of 70 emails since Monday! Counting initial responses and continuing replies that followed. Although I do feel a bit repetitive in some of my responses sharing bits about me, each of them I could at least find one thing in common that's different from each other. I think it's a great start so far, and don't regret trying it out now.
Tomorrow night, Lee and I will be meeting the South African couple. While the other meet-up of six (and still counting) will be on Monday night. Looks like I'm definitely going to be busy. Also, Lee and I are heading to Canberra this weekend for Cirque du Soleil's Varekai! We're gonna be Lisa's humble guests for the weekend. ^_~
