Malaysian selected for Cannes residency

The Malaysian Independant Film circuit does it again. Did this news even make it to mainstream media?

Malaysian filmmaker Tan Chui Mui has been selected for the 14th session of Cinefondation Cannes Residency, along with 5 other young filmmakers from around the world. She is the only representative selected from South-East Asia. The residency is organised by the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Since 2000, the Festival Residence provides accommodation and support to 12 selected young directors to help them prepare their first or second feature film. A jury presided by a film director sits twice a year, selecting these young filmmakers on the basis of their short films or even first feature film, and the merits of their feature film project.

Tan, 28, was selected on the basis of her acclaimed first feature film, Love Conquers All. The film had won two awards at the recent Pusan International Film Festival, where French director Bruno Bumont was one of the jury member of the New Currents Award.

The 14th session of residency will run from 28 February to 15 July. During their 4-and-a-half-month stay in Paris, the young directors work on the writing their feature film project, have meetings with professionals and try, with the support of the Cannes Film Festival, to bring their project to co-production status. The filmmakers will be presented in the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, and be required to stay in Europe until August to attend the Locarno Film Festival.

Tan will be developing her new feature film, Living Quietly during this residency. The project had received a CNC script development grant, and will be produced by Philippe Avril of France. They will also present the project in the world's oldest and bigger film market, Cinemart in the coming International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Tan's award-winning film, Love Conquers All, is currently screening in GSC E-cinemas in MidValley, 1 Utama and Gurney Plaza. The film is selected for competition in the upcoming film festivals of Rotterdam (Netherlands), Friborg (Switzerland), and Alba (Italy). Her short film DVD is also available for sale.
