Frankenstein in Love
Frankenstein in Love. I have to admit of my unrefined theatrical ignorance, that when I first heard the title early this year, I honestly thought it was going to be a musical. A funny one. How FAR off was I? Even Pluto's distance can't compare. I'm sure the director would be scoffing at me right now. He's been on a roll with his deep, morosely enigmatic choices of plays this year. As if I didn't see it coming.
Anyway, the girls and I made a night out of it.
And the moment it begun, it felt like an endless night. Eerily and painfully slow, the first act is the part of the play where you'll need to digest the most. Nibbling slowly from Act One where it establishes the storyline, on its differences from the original Mary Shelley version and teases the audience into what kind of romance could possibly come up from such disfigured mess (or mass) of human beings; and then into Act Two, where likening the chomping ferocious flesh-eating zombies, the pace picks up.
Set in the backdrop of a South American revolution are the grangrenous, blood-loving evil plotting living dead. The products of Dr. Frankenstein, whom had escaped a Nazi-invaded Europe in his continuous pursuit of immortality, survives and are led by the voracious Veronique. She is eager to avenge her life for Dr Frankenstein's death, as ironies go; while Frankenstein's son scours the earth to find him and confront his father for the life given.
What made the play profoundly perplexing to absorb, I found, was theatre debutant Melissa Maureen's stiff (pun intended) delivery of Veronique. While her lines seemed delivered flawlessly, what fell short of exuding the highs and lows of the play was her lack of emotional body language. I honestly had to rethink a few times what each scene were trying to deliver, had her words been accompanied by more fiercely mercurial moods.
However, the other players whom I enjoyed and felt were notably well casted were Kennie Dowle as Dr Frankenstein, Ari Ratos as Camilo Bozuffi (I loved the accent!) - despite the two being last minute additions; Mary George as Maria, Ng U-En as Dr Fook and Bharani as Mattos.
Overall, Frankenstein in Love was relatively entertaining. For its effort with the wonderful lights and sound effects accompaniment as well. However, it was my expectations that the shock factor would've been turned up two notches though.
If you're going to watch, note Douglas Lim's Lazaro weiding a real power drill in his hands. Apparently, he's shocked himself a few times drilling his head with it during the play. Kids, he might be a superstar, but don't do this at home.

i watched it on opening night. it was an interesting experience. despite the kickass light-work, it didn't bring out the drastic makeup which i was really looking forward to checking out. but apart from that, i enjoyed myself. and yeah i heard about the drill slip-up... douglas told me his teeth chattered. nasty!
