The Lake House
A long overdue review, but I read that the DVD widescreen edition just got released last week.
The first time I heard about The Lake House over a mix.fm promo, I thought it was the cheesiest love story ever! Two people who've never met, living two years apart, writing letters to each other?! Hollywood's running out of ideas.
It took a bit of convincing by one of my writers (who wrote for Everyday's a Friday) for me to see the film. As much as I adore Sandra Bullock, I couldn't quite reconcile having her and heartthrob Keanu Reeves together in a chintzy romantic film. Don't even get me started on Speed.
Eventually, I did watch it in the cinema with a couple of girlfriends. And while sitting there watching, slowly but surely, the cynic in me unravelled. I have to admit that it was the direction which captured my heart. The subtle nuances of the shots, the compositions, the colours... and the music. I love Paul McCartney's "This Never Happened Before". Every shot of the two of them, two years apart, alone in each respective lives and yet together. It was amazing cinematography and choice of setting through the seasons. You couldn't be any more analytical with this film's semiotics. I loved it! The dialogue definitely did some kind of justice to the story's premise, of course.
And I can't stop waxing lyrical that Alejandro Agresti directed this Korean remake. I don't think it would've been as heartwarmingly amazing had it been directed by a Hollywood director. How Agresti structured the timelines and scenes - that Bullock and Reeves were never together in the same shot almost 90% the film duration and yet they were together. His delivery was just awesome. My favourite will have to be the end and the editing sequence of it. My heart was just racing and I was biting my nails off over trying to figure out if they'll meet or not.
Now tell me, how many romantic films can do that to you?

I thought it was cheesy too when I saw the trailer, that's why it didn't even trigger my interest to watch it (and I watch every watchable movie in cinema). But after reading your review, I wanna watch it now! :P
