Midnite Roadtrip
Labour Day last year I joined TV Smith, Jeff Ooi and a few others on a photography roadtrip to Kuala Gandah. I thought it was a traditional run because they had previous May Day outings, so I asked TV if they were going this year.
Instead, it was just TV and I on a lazy midnight road trip in the eerie backhills of Semenyih. (We were both lazy late owls who didn't wake up when the sun's up. =P) We started out with a nice cityscape opportunity over at the infamous Bukit Belacan. I didn't expect much from my camera as the LCD screen was spoilt red and acting up on me, making it hard to see if my picture was blurry - time to buy a new camera! Ugh. But I think the lights turned out nice enough to make it look like a blurry upside-down night sky!
Right up and down the winding pitch dark roads, we tried to stop at the fancy government-run Hulu Langat Look-out point. Instead of a nicer more civilized vantage point, we found ourselves greeted by a loud karaoke warung with some uncle's rendition of Tragedi Oktober. Tragedy indeed.
After that, TV decided to direct an astigmatized midnite driver towards the Semenyih Dam saying that it was a nice eerie view of the surrounding hills in the lake. So, passing more winding and pitch black roads with barely any cat eye markers, when we finally arrive there, yours truly was a blind bat to see anything but a faint foggy reddish light in what I thought was water. At this point, TV then remembered that the last trip he was there, it was a full moon hence the dam(ned) waters were lit! At this point, TV also took over Wendy from me. At this point too, I don't think he realised I was silently praying he'd be able to drive a non-power steering, stick shift with one busted headlight and two balding left tyres!
It was at that point when he, while still driving, turned off all the lights of the car and nearly gave me a heart attack! Ugh!!!
Driving insanely through the quiet villages, as we watched the bare roads on highbeam and pass the occassional stray dog, we didn't expect to find a warung still abuzz with activity in the middle of nowhere. The place seemed quaint, and if we were there in daytime, it would be along a river. Speculated from the sounds running water adjecent to it. Among its menu of typical Malay dishes, the warung also served ikan bakar (grilled fish) fresh from the pond it's idyllic dining area was built over. (For you KLites, think Naili's Sentul on water).

This was probably the highlight of the night. Especially with some interesting shots to make out with light and reflections. We were just wondering if it would look as interesting in the day time. Maybe more crowded with holiday makers who come to the area for the waterfalls, and less romantic in the daytime?
Anyway, I'll leave you with my fave shot of the night. The rest can be viewed at my flickr site. I'm going to bed now.

I have to confess that at one point - somewhere along the wilderness - I had this nagging feeling that we could have gone join Suanie and FireAngel at Carnegie's :P
No regrets, was a good trip, and topped off with that yummy fish cake summore. Hugz.
