An exorcism in fear & trembling
"Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling"
~Philippians 2:12
I'm not one with a fetish or who gets a kick of adrenalin rush from watching horror movies. I'm just unfortunate to have girlfriends who love them and drag me along on their outings, slumber parties with horror flick screenings. And what better days to do that than a midnite movie on All Hallow's Eve.
It was Z's "last supper" with us before she left the company and she wanted so badly to watch The Exorcism of Emily Rose, much to my chagrin. Just after collecting the tickets, we went to TGIF for dinner cos she was craving her Friday's burger. It was all decorated with their famous Halloween Night decor and the crew were all fanatically dressed as every ghoul imaginable. I couldn't keep my mind at any of the conversations my colleague friends were having cos my eyes kept following each crew member as they passed our table. They were either really disgusting - with one waiter with bloody scabs, gooey-ly protruding from his face (I so didn't want him to refill my drinks for fear of his make-up glob falling into my cup!); or just hillariously scary-funny - a male waiter was dressed as the bride from hell. It was some opening to a frighful night. (Spoilers ahead)
The movie was fortunately not as scary as the trailer made it out to be. Many reviews might just tell you that it was a disappointing film. But that is only if you go in expecting to be scared shitless for the sake of an adrenalin rush. Instead, while entirely focused on the trial post Emily Rose's death, the film basically had one objective throughout the whole film - that was to tell Emily Rose's story. Based on the true story of young german girl, Anneliese Michel, this film represents exorcism almost factually that were otherwise cheapened in other exorcist films. The whole idea that being possessed and hearing eerie demonic voices from a demure teenage girl was a cheap thrill ride down adrenalin lane and for entertainment only was brought to a thinking standpoint in Emily Rose.
So if you were born a Catholic or have come close to witnessing an exorcism yourself in the past, then this film would've opened the floodgates of your spiritual eye. And that was exactly what it did to me. I used to see visions when i was younger, and they were mostly good things. However of late, life's been more about being engrossed by worldly things. Yet, once in a while when I get reminded of my spiritual side everything just comes flooding back when I'm not ready to face it. Or more like I don't want to work out my own salvation in fear & trembling.
Bottomline, some of you will not look at 3am the same way again. And the little baby girl had to go look for daddy so she didn't have to drive all the way home alone. tsk...
